Synopsis (from Wildside Cinema): A family get-together goes to hell in a hand basket when government officials crash the party, force everybody into a nearby forest and subject them to tests against their will in order to detect a dangerous viral infection. As each infected are detected and quickly executed, the “festivities” are cut short when a horde of rampaging undead tear thru the forest, forcing the military to fend for themselves and their surviving prisoner Bruce to flee for his life.

Now on the run from the military, the ferocious infected and undead, flesh-eating shamblers, Bruce has no choice but to pick up an axe and fight for whatever time he’s got left.

Joshua Long’s Axed claims to be “The most violent Australian zombie move ever made!” which might be considered a rather bold proclamation to make but having only seen one Aussie zombie film (Undead) myself, who am I to say whether that’s right or wrong? What I can say is this, Axed is delightfully violent and equally as entertaining. From beginning to end we’re given running, screaming, executions, decapitations, flesh-ripping, head shots and much more. If you’re a fan of running zombies, Axed has got ‘em. Like the slow, shambling zombies? Axed has those as well! This is balls-to-the-wall zombie entertainment and it’s all crammed into a short thirty minute run time.

Brisbane writer/director Josh Long on Axed (from Revenant Magazine): I am a lifelong horror/zombie film fanatic and the idea of Axed came from wanting to make an Evil Dead film with zombies. Lets get one thing straight… Here in Australia horror films don’t get made at least that’s what I thought but after seeing films like Undead and Wolf Creek come out, I got very excited and wanted to make my Dawn Of The Dead, Evil Dead film. I also wanted to top them and the one place I thought I could was gore.

We ended up with a film made around $10,000 Australian which I think ends up being about $50 USA… ha ha ha. So as you can tell the budget was micro. I have never struggled under those conditions, I love films made like that.

We decided to bring everything back to basics and shoot on HDV which was great as we wanted that Versus/28 Days Later look. We even brought back classics used in the original Evil Dead like the shakey cam. We bolted the camera to the middle of a plank and sprinted through the bushes with a person on either side. It was a lot of fun making the film. Most of the budget went to makeup fx and fake blood.

Selected Filmography: The Human In A Can Story (2003), Lucid Being (2003), Blue Rinse Bandits (2006), Em (2007)
